I used to use instant messaging on AOL back when it first started, before text messaging became popular. It was really nice then, but now it's just easier to text, since that doesn't require you logging on to a computer and having internet connection. I think what's even better than AOL or Yahoo instant messaging and texting is Skype, which allows people and businesses to make free videos and voice calls, send instant messages, and share files with other Skype users worldwide.
